Conference Diary

Friday 25th July

Despite the celebrations on Thursday night there was still much to do and see on Friday. Delegates had already chosen which of four visits to go on and only had to board the correct coach with their luggage. Mostly they did so but numerous, undisclosed changes of plan caused the conference staff a degree of anxiety as we all attempted to board coaches in the cramped confines of St John's entranceway. But all the parties got underway, more or less on time, to do battle with the weather, the traffic, (the police in one case!), and the vagaries of coach and taxi operators. Each party had tales to tell from this re-entry into the real world which contrasted strongly with the serenity of the St John's environment enjoyed for the major part of the conference.

All of the visits, to Royal Geographical Society, HM Land Registry and the Defence Geographic and Imagery Intelligence Agency in London and to the national head office of Ordnance Survey in Southampton were very interesting and very useful for the delegates and we must thank these organisations for their hospitality and their patience in coping with revised schedules.

The day, and the conference, was rounded off for London delegates with a visit the Fine Rooms and Map Library at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office before a reception and evening meal at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in Parliament Square. For the Southampton delegates there was an evening meal at the National Motor Museum in the nearby New Forest.
